Powers/Abilities:

Scott Summers has the mutant ability to project blasts of kinetic energy from his eyes. The energy appears as a powerful beam of red light. However, despite its appearance, it is not a laser and does not emit heat. It is a constant flow of kinetic energy.

This energy is controlled through his visor, containing ruby quartz lenses that can control the power of the blast. Scott also wears glasses made of ruby quartz crystal to control the energy when not in costume. Unlike the visor, the glasses cannot control the intensity of the blast and simply prevent the beam from passing through the lenses completely.

Because of the injury sustained in the events of his mutatation, the part of his brain that controls the beam is damaged. Because of this, the beam is constant and cannot be physically controlled. Emma Frost was able to temporarily unlock Scott's ability to control the beam, but this ability eventually wore off and Scott had to continue using his visor and glasses.

Scott is immune to his own powers. This is why he can close his eyes and the beams cease. This is why Scott and his brother, Alex, are apparently immune to each other's powers. However, neither Scott nor Alex are immune to their youngest brother, Vulcan. He can harm them and they, in turn, can harm him.
